Ledwall Vs. Display: why not both?

STIM Tech Bites: thematic pills on news, trends and curiosities related to the AV & Modern Workplace market, on the occasion of ISE 2024 - VIDEO

Ledwall and Display are sometimes regarded as interchangeable, but in reality they each have their own specificity depending on the occasions of use.

In general, ledwalls are preferred for their larger size, higher brightness, and greater flexibility in customizing shapes and sizes.
However, displays may be more suitable for applications that require higher resolution and image sharpness. In addition, displays may be cheaper than ledwalls, depending on size and technical specifications.

Display: features and applications

Displays are screens, usually LCDs, traditionally covering areas up to 110".

The main features of most displays on the market can be summarized as follows:

  • Ideal display for high-definition close-up images and videos that create a strong direct impact with the consumer;

  • Ability to integrate touchscreen technologies to make the user experience interactive;

  • "Standard" size, but modular with each other to form Videowall, for the formation of one large image or a varied palimpsest.

In the past, Displays were mainly indoors and, if mounted outdoors, needed adequate protection systems against sun and weather. Today, high-brightness LCD arrays have allowed them to be used adequately outdoors as well, and sometimes without adding additional protection, since it is already included in the factory construction.

Ledwall: features and applications

Ledwalls are complex technological systems composed of 3-color RGB LED diodes capable of reproducing digital images and videos from any source.

Initially created for outdoor solutions, always on and visible even at considerable distances (as, for example, in sports fields), ledwalls have gradually established themselves inside buildings as well, partly replacing video walls or video projectors. In parallel, the distance between one diode and another has shortened, allowing for short or ultra-short "steps."

Ledwall technology is characterized by:

  • High brightness and deep contrasts, allowing viewing in any lighting condition;

  • Energy saving (LED brightness is self-regulated) annually by 60% compared with conventional screens;

  • Unlimited scalability and flexibility, allowing customization in size and shape;

  • Support for digital video and images, programmable and manageable by the external controller;

  • No visible frames or joints for a seamless uniform surface;

  • Extended Lifetime, which can reach up to 100,000 hours (more than 10 years with 24/7 use);

  • Ideal viewing from a long distance (at least 2 meters-the pitch determines the minimum visibility distance, which can be over 20 meters);

  • Waterproof and resistant to dust and heat, thanks to IP65 protection.

Ledwall Vs. Display? No, Ledwall and/or Display

Thus, the choice is not between Ledwalls and traditional Displays, but which solution to employ depending on the context of use and the specific needs, which can be different even within a single project.

If the context requires a large screen for outdoor use or in bright light conditions, where brightness and dimensional flexibility are critical, a Ledwall might be the best choice. On the other hand, for indoor applications where image quality and resolution are critical, such as for displaying detailed graphic content or high-quality video, a traditional Display might be preferable.
